Get In The Groove with Bob Gebbie

Workshop Poster

Bob will tune up your musicality with some fun grooving that you can use next time you are social dancing.  He will review the critical importance of the “two beat increment” and provide you with some cool but simple rhythms which you can easily integrate into your pattern flow.

Bob has been dancing WCS for over 5 years and is one of Myles and Tessa’s certified WCS instructors. Bob is a recovering pattern junkie and wants you to join him on his path to dancing more musically.

Embodying Musical Attitude with Henry Hwi

Poster for online workshop Embodying Musical Attitude with Henry Hwi

Henry will explore ways to listen to and connect your natural body movements with music to slowly get your body safely prepped for dancing again. He will play instrumental and original versions of well-known (or new!) songs and facilitate exercises and discussions on how to approach music in a way to draw out individual expressions (attitude!).

Henry has been dancing for over 10 years, starting with salsa and other latin dance forms, and dabbling with International Ballroom before finding his home with West Coast Swing. Since then, he has increased his WCS dance expression with tap and hip hop.

WCS Warm Up with Gabriel Shaw

Poster for WCS Warm Up with Gabriel Shaw

Kinesiologist and dance instructor, Coach Gabe will provide important warm up and strength/joint exercises to slowly get your body safely prepped for dancing again.  He will briefly review basic patterns to help you shake off the rust, with gentle reminders of keeping on time to various genres and speeds of music.  To finish he will have some fun with free dancing/explorative movements to remind us that the essence of WCS is improvisation.

Gabe is a practicing Kinesiologist (BCAK), Clinical Exercise Physiologist and High-Performance Specialist (CSEP) with over ten years of experience teaching movement. He uses mindful, integrated movement to help people rehab injuries and improve their activities. Gabriel is also a west coast swing dancer and so in this class he will focus on stability and mobility exercises for dance.

WCS “Tune Up” Series

Workshop poster

The BCSDC is presenting a fun series of four online workshops featuring local instructors. The workshops are designed to get you moving both physically and musically in preparation for when social dancing opens up again. Over the past year there have been very few opportunities to dance, so most of us are pretty rusty! As Provincial health restrictions begin to lift, we want to be ready for when we can finally social dance again. This 4-part series will help prepare you both physically and musically.

Goals and Expectations
The primary goal of this series is to have fun, and to “tune up” ourselves physically and musically. Physically, we will get you moving again starting with dance-specific warmup and strengthening drills as well as basic WCS patterns. We will introduce cool moves as we progress through the series. Musically we will teach you movements to hit fun features in your favourite WCS songs.

Musicality is a personal skill which you should be able to do solo before you can effectively execute it with a partner. Practicing musicality solo is perfect for these 4 online workshops (and loads of fun!!)You are not expected to attend all sessions. You can join the series late, or miss workshops, because the workshops are independent of each other. If you miss any you will be able to find them posted on our Facebook page later.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in the workshops.
